Until then…This…

Sabbath time is a revolutionary challenge to the violence of overwork, because it honors the necessary wisdom of dormancy. If certain plant species do not lie dormant during winter, the plant begins to die off. Rest is not just a psychological convenience; it is a spiritual and biological necessity. Perhaps this is why, in most spiritual traditions, “Remember the Sabbath” is more than simply a lifestyle suggestion. It is a commandment, an ethical precept as serious as prohibitions against killing, stealing and lying. How can forgetting the Sabbath — forgetting to be restful, sing songs and find nourishment and delight–possibly be morally and socially dangerous?

This was a Big Week for me.

Wednesday – I worked with some College Students to frame a bedroom room in house ravaged by Hurricane Ike in Galveston, Tx.

Friday – I hung a Chandelier over our tub that we’ve been wanting to get and hang for over a year. I’m not really an “electrical” guy, but…I figured it out…without getting shot across the room.

Saturday – Jeanne and I built a Headboard from scratch that we’ve been wanting a to build for over a year. It took us about 4 hours of work, but it saved us about $800!

Why was this week so BIG?

Because I actually DID WORK with my hands. To most folks, it’s not a big deal, but for someone who can sit 8 hours in front of a laptop and call that “work“, it is very important for me to get callouses, to lift heavy things, to be sore, and to use a pneumatic nailer from time to time.

It’s good to WORK. It’s good to BUILD. It’s good to actually be TIRED from the right things.

I know you already know this…but this week, I needed to be reminded.

Your Turn :: What are you WORKing on right now?

Six days shall you be a workaholic;
on the seventh day, shall you join the serene company of human beings.
Six days shall you take orders from your boss;
on the seventh day, shall you be master/mistress of your own life.
Six days shall you toil in the market;
on the seventh day, shall you detach from money matters.
Six days shall you create, drive, create, invent, push;
on the seventh day, shall you reflect.
Six days shall you be the perfect success;
on the seventh day, shall you remember that not everything is in your power.
Six days shall you be a miserable failure;
on the seventh day, shall you be on top of the world.
Six days shall you enjoy the blessings of work;
on the seventh day, shall you understand that being is as important as doing.

Your Turn :: REST…..
