9 Reasons NOT to walk out on Watchmen

While Watching The Watchmen this weekend I counted no less than 7 people WALK OUT in utter frustration.

There are many perfectly acceptable reasons for you to walkout of The Watchmen :: It is LONG, it is violent, it is dark, and there is a member of the blue man group walking around buck naked for half the movie.

It earned it’s R rating to be sure.

Aside from that…I would like to suggest 9 reasons why you should hunker down and not walk out ::

  1. It is unlike ANY superhero story you have ever seen.  In the world of The Watchmen – With great Power comes great Depravity, (not responsibility).
  2. It is a TRULY Postmodern Parable.  It is largely non-linear, “Good” is unsettlingly relative, and the end is not nearly as important as the middle.
  3. The Watchmen is recognized by Time Magazine as one of the Top 100 Novels of all time (it’s no Daredevil, but that must mean it’s pretty good).
  4. It’s more fun to watch other people swear at the screen as they stomp out.
  5. Rarely, if ever, has their been a shot for shot interpretation of an original literary work such as this.
  6. Zach Snyder’s trademark Fast / Slow / Fast never looked cooler (even without all the genetically engineered abs from 300).
  7. Watchmen gives you a glimpse a world truly void of hope.  It is as sobering and tragic as they come.
  8. There are tons of subtle Nerdtastic metaphors and messages hidden throughout the movie (ie. as one hero is exacting his revenge on a former enemy, he walks by a prison laundry room with a sign that says “Do Not Cross Line”).
  9. Finally, you paid $10 per ticket plus $12 for the Pop Corn, Drink, and Sno Caps – In these tough economic times, can you really afford to walk out?

There you have it, 9 reasons you should tough this one out and give it a chance.  It won’t change your life, but it may change your perspective on what a world without hope looks like and give you a glimpse into your own dark sense of depravity if left unchecked or unaccounted for.  (sounds like fun!)

Your Turn :: Did you see it?  What did you think? (BTW – Bonus Points if you’ve you read the book?)

If you made it down this far…you deserve this…
